Il blog energia si è già occupata (2 e 30 novembre 2014) del tema “Shale oil” e della battaglia globale geopolitica tra i grandi estrattori di combustibili fossili della Terra. Da un lato principalmente gli stati arabi e Russia che hanno giacimenti tradizionali di estrazione, dall’altra i Paesi che estraggono il petrolio in modo “non convenzionale”, primi su tutti Stati Uniti e Canada.
Sono due principalmente le nuove tecniche di estrazione:
- l’escavazione e lavorazione delle sabbie bituminose (in Canada, immagine sopra);
- il fracking (trivellazione orizzontale) negli Stati Uniti; un processo che consiste nella frantumazione delle rocce dalle quali vengono estratti materiali oleosi e gassosi. E’ così che è nata la rivoluzione dello Shale Oil e dello Shale gas con un incremento del PIL che si stima a +5%.
Ma quali sono le conseguenze sull’ambiente e sulla salute? Non sono identificabili perché non esistono precedenti. Ad oggi sono stati accertati inquinamenti delle falde acquifere, sversamenti su terreni, deforestazione (che in Canada ha già contribuito a far perdere 30.000 Kmq di foreste secolari, l’equivalente della superficie del Belgio) e lo stress idrico: solo nel North Dakota, lo scorso anno sono stati impiegati 20 miliardi di litri d’acqua in questo settore. Ovviamente questi problemi hanno fatto nascere un agguerrito fronte ecologista “anti-Shale” e “anti-sabbie” ma questa nuova corsa all’oro ha già preso il via e nel breve periodo queste fonti verranno fortemente sfruttate per ridurre la propria dipendenza energetica da altri Paesi. Quindi se da un lato anche in Europa si verifica il ribasso del costo del petrolio, facendoci risparmiare, è giusto riflettere anche su un altro tipo di prezzo che si stiamo pagando e del quale non siamo consapevoli.
L’energia pulita ha ancora molta strada da compiere prima di trasformarsi veramente in una valida alternativa ai combustibili fossili. Nonostante il loro significativo sviluppo infatti, le fonti rinnovabili possono dare un contributo alla riduzione della dipendenza energetica soltanto sul lungo periodo, cioè nell’arco di qualche decennio. Nel prossimo post del 26 gennaio chiederò a un amico geologo che vive in Canada di raccontarci cosa sta succedendo nelle Americhe a causa di queste nuove tecniche di estrazione e quali sono le ricadute ambientali sul territorio e sull’uomo.
